LIKE THE WOLF, THE FLAMENCO ART FORM HAS
REMARKABLE POWERS OF ENDURANCE
Authentic gypsy songs have survived and
persevered for almost five hundred years - traveling from parts
of India to Spain where the flamenco art form is believed
to originate. Flamenco is a meld of song (cante),
guitar (toque) and dance (baile). Monterey
Peninsula College's Ethnic Dance Instructor, Alicia Morena - di
Palma, incorporates the history and traditions of flamenco
in her Flamenco dance class (DANC 16) and Foundations of Ethnic
Dance offered at Monterey High School.
Several years ago, in response to requests
from her dance students, Ms. Morena - di Palma combined all the
interesting and colorful handouts and posters she used in class
into a reference manual. In fact, one of her students was also a
visual artist and did the initial graphics format and layout.
It was a lot of work and a labor Ms. Morena - di Palma felt
passionately about primarily due to the gypsy tradition from
which flamenco evolved. Now, this manual, tested by
students for over two years, has been updated and expanded.
Available for purchase from the MPC Bookstore, the 2nd edition
of "Spanish Flamenco Dance Reference Guide," is intended to be a
companion to studio dance instruction and offers important
background about the flamenco form.
